Braaibroodjie (pronounced Bra-ee-bru-ee-kee) is a toasted sandwich that is cooked over an open fire or coals.
This is the recipe where the South African braaibroodjie meets the Aussie bacon and egg roll. It makes for a satisfying breakfast when camping. It also saves time doing dishes as you only need to use one pan and a braai grid. Add fried onion, cheese or chutney to take this braaibroodjie to the next level.
The Travel Braai is designed to perfectly fit four braaibroodjies.
Start by cooking the bacon in a skillet over coals to your liking.
While the bacon is cooking, spread the butter on half of the slices of bread. Place the slices butter side down in the Travel Braai or any closed grid.
The butter on the outside will ensure a nice golden toasted braaibroodjie.
Once the bacon is cooked, place it on top of the buttered bread.
Next, crack the eggs in the pan to cook—season with salt and pepper. You want your eggs cooked just under since they will finish cooking in the braaibroodjie.
Place the eggs on the bacon and add any other fillings of your choosing.
Lastly, place the remaining slices of bread on top of the bacon and eggs and spread butter on top of the bread.
After closing the grid, toast the breakfast braaibroodjie over medium coals, using the Travel Braai stand, until golden.
Let it cool for a few minutes and enjoy it straight from the grid.
